Primary Functions

This position is responsible for identification of customer needs, the design, and proposal of value-added solutions for customers that maximize the customer’s energy savings, return on investment and Horizon profit.  The Design & Implementation Specialist is Horizon’s primary technical support for Mechanical Energy Solutions including energy system design and troubleshooting assistance.  This position also includes EV (Electric Vehicle) Charging site feasibility and design, planning and management of the site planning, and permitting and development of the complex EV Charging projects. 

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collect and review information on qualified projects from the Business Development Manager, Horizon Sales Representative and/or outside referral source. 
  • Complete on-site assessment, including equipment and current system review, and identify opportunities for improved efficiencies.  Assist in comprehensive site design for EV Charging that incorporates design elements from civil, electrical, structural, mechanical engineers, landscape architects and other subcontractors involved with the projects.
  • Research equipment and design processes to ensure that customers energy savings goals and return on investment is maximized while ensuring that Horizon gross profit and margins goals are realized.  Perform systems analysis and prepare reports and studies as well as cost estimates.  Determine economic feasibility of project.
  • Collaborate with outside sales, contractors, and equipment manufacturers to ensure maximum cost savings.  Inquire, understand, and correlate rebates to purchases for project.
  • Determine mechanical design to meet customer needs, improved energy utilization; develop material and labor pricing and profit margin, utility rebate and project plan.  Develop final competitive turn-key bid for Horizon Business Development Manager to present and close project sale.  Order product and services as specified in final accepted proposal.  Support management of project.  Assist installation manager with troubleshooting, redesign, and specifications.
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of applicable mechanical product lines and EV, with a focus on energy savings and energy efficiency incentives.  Assist in managing customer relationships directly and indirectly through outside sales support staff.  Provide technical services and value-added solutions to customers.
  • Position may supervise other technical professionals.


  • Knowledge of HVAC products, mechanical building systems and EV charging technology required.  Must maintain an in-depth knowledge relating to mechanical product applications/solutions including energy efficiency solutions.
  • Problem analysis and solving skills, strong organization and teamwork skills and experience preferred. 
  • Technical degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Mechanical or Electrical required.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD a plus.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills required. Ability to communicate technical material to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to lift 30-50 lbs: ability to repeatedly bend, reach, stoop, push, pull, twist and remain standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Ability to work in narrow spaces and at heights.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
