Primary Functions

The Sales Specialist – Industrial & Safety Products is responsible for technical support and marketing, directly associated with Horizon’s Industrial and Safety Products and Services.  Coordinate and implement the outside sales and marketing efforts with the objective of increased sales, gross and net profit and exceptional customer service.

Analyze and identify market and customer needs; design and sell solutions that maximize Horizon’s Industrial & Safety Product Offerings and Services.  Act as Horizon’s primary customer representative and liaison to initiate and develop mutually beneficial, long-term relationships with customers and potential customers. 


The Sales Specialist - Industrial & Safety Products will develop and manage customer relationships directly, as well as indirectly, through Account Managers and support staff, with Industrial Products and Services specifications, product pricing and product availability.  Manage and/or support contract negotiations and renewal, quotation process and financial/payment arrangements consistent with Horizon standards.


Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of all of our key product lines, with a focus on abrasives, cutting tools, safety and general MRO with the desire and ability to apply knowledge to the customer’s manufacturing processes.  Introduce new products and tools, demonstrate features advantages and benefits and answer customer questions regarding product applications.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Functions in partnership with the Account Management and Inside Sales staff to differentiate Horizon through superior Technical Solutions and Added Value for our customers.
  • Support and participate in implementing proactive sales strategies, business development plans and marketing programs/goals, both short and long range, that provide profit growth and expansion of company product and/or services in the assigned markets.  Maintain sales programs within assigned territory; enhance customer communication regarding services, supplies, prices and products. 
  • Determine, set and act according to sales potential and sales maintenance requirements within accounts and territory to maximize Horizon sales effectiveness, penetration and service levels. 
  • Manage customer contract negotiations and renewal, quotations, pricing, delivery and billing/payment consistent with Horizon standards.  Monitor competitive trends and activity within the customer base/territory and make recommendations for competitively superior programs, services, contracts and pricing.
  • Via written and/or verbal customer consultation; Identify customer needs and Horizon product specifications, services and solutions.  Make recommendations with a technical basis, to design specifications and insuring product compatibility with customer’s proposed application.
  • Proactively monitor customer commitments, requirements and schedules.  Anticipate and resolve and/or coordinate resolution of potential conflicts of customer requirements versus Horizon performance.
  • Communicate potential problems and changes with customers; proactively identify and resolve problems effecting customer satisfaction and/or Horizon profit.
  • Establish and maintain a highly responsive relationship with internal and external customers, vendors, supplies and a variety of other Horizon business related personnel.
  • Determine and set pricing, in conjunction with other Horizon resources, considering order volume, total customer relationship and external competitive climate. 
  • Ability to understand processes, procedures and hands on application as they apply to our Industrial and Safety products and services in the manufacturing environment.
  • Design and sell solutions that maximize Horizon product offerings, services and technical support services.  Prepare quotations, project plans, schedules and determine pricing to meet customer needs.


  • This position requires an experienced Industrial & Safety Product Sales professional.
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial applications and industrial customers in the designated territory.
  • Must have and maintain an in-depth knowledge of Horizon's Industrial & Safety products and product applications/solutions; product availability, channels to market, competitive products and competitors within the Industrial marketplace.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize a broad range of selling techniques and the ability to negotiate and close sales required; outside sales experience in distribution preferred.
  • Technical knowledge of Horizon specific products and product applications; product design, installation and maintenance within assigned sales product area preferred.  Knowledge of features, benefits and use/application of industrial and safety product applications.
  • Ability to influence and negotiate with a wide variety of individuals required; broad understanding of business processes, systems and structures preferred.  Capability to plan and prioritize tasks and ability to use business system software to retrieve and update information.
  • Knowledge of integrated supply strategies and sourcing/complementary products sales strategies for Horizon's Industrial and Safety Products required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. 
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Engineering, Marketing, Business Administration/Mgmt.
