Primary Functions

The Outside Account Manager-Industrial and Safety Sales has overall responsibility for the development and continued growth of mutually beneficial customer relationships and the coordination of Horizon and vendor’s technical and training resources and solutions with the objective of superior customer service and profitable product, services and solution sales.  This position will have a focus on the Industrial Market in the Greater Rochester market.


Outside Account Manager-Industrial and Safety Sales is responsible and accountable to establish and implement sales and marketing plans, coordinate and implement the outside sales and marketing efforts for Horizon’s Industrial and Safety products and services within the assigned geographic territory and customer base.  The objective of this position includes maintaining current business levels as well as the identification and development of new business opportunities, relationships and increased new business sales.


Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of all our key product lines, manage customer relationships directly, as well as indirectly, through technical, inside sales and support staff, with products and services Apply construction industry knowledge to the customer’s construction needs, including industrial and safety product and services.  Introduce new products and tools, demonstrate features, advantages and benefits and answer customer questions regarding product applications.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Initiate and manage the customer relationship, Horizon and vendor resources and the sales process for the sale of all Horizon product lines and any combination of products, technical solutions as well as the services and education.  This position has a specialized focus on Horizon’s Industrial Products and their application in the Industrial Customer market.  
  • Analyze and identify market and customer opportunities and needs; design and sell solutions that maximize Horizon’s product offerings, services and technical support services.  Act as Horizon’s primary customer representative and liaison to initiate and develop mutually beneficial, long-term relationships with customers and potential customers.
  • Establish and implement proactive sales strategies, business development plans and marketing programs/goals, both short and long range, that provide profit growth and expansion of Industrial and Safety products and/or services within the assigned customer base.  Pro-actively pursue new business development opportunities and ensure that Horizon and Horizon vendors are well positioned to be the distributor and vendors of choice within the marketplace.
  • Manage customer contract negotiations and renewal, quotations, pricing, delivery and billing/payment consistent with Horizon standards.
  • Monitor competitive trends and activity within the geography and make recommendations for competitively superior programs, services, products and pricing.  
  • Via written and/or verbal customer consultation, identify customer needs and Horizon product specifications, services and solutions that meet or exceed those needs. 
  • Proactively monitor customer commitments, requirements and schedules.  Anticipate and resolve and/or coordinate resolution of potential conflicts of customer requirements versus Horizon performance.
  • Establish and maintain a highly responsive relationship with internal and external customers, vendors, supplies and a variety of other Horizon business related personnel.
  • In collaboration with other Horizon resources, prepare quotations, project plans, schedules and determine pricing to meet customer needs and ensure Horizon’s lead position in the market considering order volume, total customer relationship and external competitive climate. Design and sell solutions that maximize Horizon product offerings, services and technical support services.


  • Account Management experience and previous successful Technical Sales and/or Account Management experience required.  Previous experience in Industrial and Safety Product Sales and/or Technical Product Sales into the Industrial customer base strongly preferred.  Direct experience in solution sales and technical solution development, project management and engineering and implementation within distribution desired. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Engineering, Marketing, Business Administration/Mgmt. or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to utilize a broad range of selling techniques and the ability to negotiate and close product, solution and consulting sales required.  Previous experience consulting, negotiating and selling to all levels, including the executive levels preferred.  Technical knowledge of a broad range of Horizon's Products, Services and Product Applications are required.
  • Incumbents must have and maintain knowledge relating to Horizon products and product applications/solutions; product availability, channels to market, competitive products and competitors.
  • Strong collaboration, communication and problem-solving skills required. Broad understanding of business processes, systems and structures preferred.  Capability to plan and prioritize tasks and ability to use business system software to retrieve and update information.
  • OSHA 10 Safety certification strongly preferred; must stay updated on all OSHA regulations.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
