  • Primary Functions

    This position is responsible for identification of customer needs, the design, and proposal of value added solutions for customers that maximize the customer’s energy savings, return on investment and Horizon profit. The Energy Engineer is Horizon’s primary technical support for Mechanical Energy Solutions including energy system design and trouble shooting assistance.  This position provides energy engineering and value added solutions to Horizon customers, installation technicians, and outside sales. 

    Major Duties & Responsibilities

    Collect and review information on qualified projects from Business Development Manager, Horizon Sales Representative and/or outside referral source. 


    Complete on-site facilities energy assessment including equipment and current system review, energy usage records, facility, intended and proposed use.  Identify opportunities for improved efficiencies.


    Research equipment and design processes to ensure that customers energy savings goals and return on investment is maximized while ensuring that Horizon gross profit and margins goals are realized. Perform systems analysis and prepare reports and studies as well as cost estimates. Determine economic feasibility of project.


    Collaborate with outside sales, contractors and equipment manufacturers to ensure maximum cost savings.  Inquire, understand and correlate rebates to purchases for project.


    Determine mechanical design to meet customer needs, improved energy utilization; develop material and labor pricing and profit margin, utility rebate and project plan.  Develop final competitive turn-key bid for Horizon Business Development Manager to present and close project sale.


    Order product and services as specified in final accepted proposal.  Support management of project.  Assist project manager with troubleshooting, redesign and specifications.


    Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of applicable mechanical product lines, with a focus on energy savings and energy efficiency incentives. Assist in managing customer relationships directly and indirectly through outside sales support staff.  Provide technical services and value added solutions to customers.


    Knowledge of HVAC products and mechanical building systems required.  Must maintain an in-depth knowledge relating to mechanical product applications/solutions including energy efficiency solutions. Understanding of the Technical Product Sales Process and previous sales or direct sales support experience required.  Experience with value added selling process strongly preferred. Problem analysis and solving skills, strong organization and teamwork skills and experience preferred. 


    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering required. CEA (Certified Energy Auditor), CEM (Certified Energy Manager), LEED (Leadership in energy and Environmental Design Certification) or PE (Professional Engineer) a plus. Ability to calculate energy consumption and savings required.   Proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint required. 


    Ability to lift 30-50 lbs: ability to repeatedly bend, reach, stoop, push, pull, twist and remain standing or sitting for extended periods of time.  Ability to work in narrow spaces and at heights.


    Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
